Two key projects of the Department of Agriculture- Regional Field Unit ( DA-RFU 10 ) were turned over to the local government of Oroquieta City on February 7, 2012 consisting of a Farm-to-Market Road and an Agricultural Packing Center. The Farm-to-Market road costing P1.5 million with a counterpart from LGU-Oroquieta was constructed in Barangay Lower Rizal connecting Barangay Tuyabang Alto and an Agricultural Packing Center costing P1.2 million constructed and located in Barangay Canubay.
The simple turnover ceremony was attended by Barangay Officials, Head of Offices, SP members led by Vice Mayor Harry Guantero, DA RFU-10 represented by Mrs. Corazon Balabat, Focal Person on Food Terminal projects who also led the opening and ribbon- cutting ceremonies together with Oroquieta City Mayor Jason T. Almonte .
During the turn-over program Mayor Almonte stressed the need for the LGU to provide the people with the infrastructure and post harvest facility. He also stressed that ongoing projects such as providing seeds and planting materials to the barangays is just one of the component programs of the city. He cited the need for the city to acquire additional and new farm machineries such as tractors to further boost the agriculture sector. Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Guantero who also shared the same views with Mayor Almonte emphasized that Agricultural produce brought by traders from outside the city should be taxed. In return these taxes will be used to maintain and support our agriculture programs, he added.
The Agricultural Packing Center will serve as the food terminal in the city. Fresh fruits and vegetables brought in by traders are weighed, sorted, packed and quality of the commodity is checked to make sure it’s safe for consumption before they are distributed to nearby markets. (SIDLAK )
